McGregor McKellen is an English actor who has worked in film, television, and theatre since the 1960s. Among the roles he played were Romeo Montague, John Proctor, Macbeth, and Billy Fisher. He has been a very successful actor. Queen Elizabeth II knighted the actor between 1991 and 2000! Most people today remember him as Gandalf from the Lord of the Rings trilogy and Magneto from the X-Men series.

He is best known for his work on the first two films of Peter Jackson’s trilogy.  McKellen is also known for his roles as Gandalf in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Sir Leigh Teabing in The DaVinci Code, James Whale in Gods and Monsters, Edward Grey, and A Vampire Hunter, opposite Brad Pitt. 

In 1991 McKellen became one of only two people to achieve “the Triple Crown of Acting” – nominated for both a Golden Globe Award and an Oscar for acting performances. His Emmy award came in 1999. He was one of the first actors to achieve this feat in the UK. 

The Fight For Gay Rights

“Gandalf” came out in 1988 on BBC Radio Thamesmead during an impassioned speech about gay rights. As part of his plea, he promoted public awareness about AIDS prevention at the Royal College of Nursing Congress. 

The following year, he co-founded the British LGBT rights organization Stonewall UK. An entity that supported the rights of lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and transgender individuals in Britain. Michael Cashman, Patrick Strudwick, etc. were among its members. 

Nick Cuthell, Ian’s assistant director, went on to date him after coming out publicly about his sexuality. The actor dated Sean Mathias, a British theatre director and former artistic director of Sydney Theatre Company, his long-term partner, and stage manager at London’s Old Vic theatre.
